Palms

Palms are almost certainly the most elegant of pot plants, they come in all sizes and give a satisfying tropical feel. They make very versatile houseplants and, if you read the information below, you will see that there is a palm suitable for most situations within the home. Some of these indoor plants are easy to care for and others can be a little more difficult, but all are rewarding. 

The Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) is perhaps the most popular, it is simple to grow and will fit into most living rooms and is reasonably light tolerant. A good choice if you are thinking of a houseplant to give a palm as a gift.

Chrysalidocarpus Lutescens (Areca Palm)

This is a bushy and attractive palm but needs constant attention to keep it looking good.  In lower light conditions it tends to spread and is less upright.

       Needs

  • Good to Medium light but avoid full sun
  • Water weekly, do not allow to dry out.
  • Liquid feed - April to September

Howea forsteriana (Kentia Palm)

This is the classic indoor palm, slow growing and elegant with easy maintenance. It can reach 2.4m over time.

Needs

  • Good to medium light but avoid full sun
  • Water once every two weeks, reduce watering in winter and mist regularly
  • Liquid feed - April to September

Caryota Mitis (Fish Tail Palm)

This palm features attractive fishtail shapes leaves. In the wild they grow to over 10m and indoors they are useful because they can cope with sunny situations and makes a good conservatory plant. 

Needs

  • Good to Medium Light
  • Water once every two weeks
  • Good drainage essential
  • Avoid contact with and any red fruits it produces, although it is unlikely to produce these indoors.

This is one of the most attractive palms, slow growing it has hard bushy leaves and can reach a height of 1.5m.

Chamaedorea (Parlour Palm)

This is a bushy shrub palm that copes well in poor light. The leaves are soft and light green. They seldom grow to more than 1m.

Rhapis Palm

This palm looks a little like a bamboo, but is easier to grow, and unlike the bamboo will not shed its leaves. It seldom exceeds 1.8m as an indoor plant.

Phoenix Canariensis (Date Palm)

This palm is as tough as they come, it will thrive in full sun and cope with low overnight temperatures. A word of warning though, the leaves have hard sharp tips, so they need plenty of space.
